Habitat
The
gnu originally comes from the cape provinces of South Africa, but
lives is northern parts of the country as well now. It can even
be found in the Kruger Parc. Orginally the gnu lived throughout
the whole of southern Africa, except for desert-like areas. Both
gnu's are herd animals and real grass eaters.
Breeding
Black gnu's have been successfully breeded and reintroduced in the
wildlife.
Hunting
At the end of the end century the black gnu's were close to extinction
but nowadays we can find them in reasonable numbers again. Athough
this is mostly in reservates and/or wildfarms. The stags are the
only gnu's that are hunted, the does and calfs are never hunted.
The stags that are rejected by the bigger and stronger gnu's often
just crash the gates and are hunted for that reason.
GNU
MEAT
Gnu meat is comparable to very lean beef, although it is slightly
lighter of colour. Be careful when preparing the meat as it is really
only suitable to be cooked rare or medium
Cuts:
Just like other antelopes, only the fillets, tenderloins and 4-cuts
are available.The meat is vacuumpacked.
