LAMA - LAMA PERUANA

Lama is closer to the camel than to the sheep. The lama, alpaca Guanuco and the Vicuna, some of these are more familiar than others. The alpaca is primarily breeded for the wool, and in the second place for the meat. The guanaco lives in the wildlife and is haunted for its meat. Lama's are being used as pack-animal on great heights. This is because that they have got big lungs. The lama is the oldest known domestic animal it is a fact that lamas have been used for wool, milk and meat for over 5000 years ago.

Habitat
Lama's can be found in the far north of Peru to the south of Chili, they live high in the mountains as well in lower areas. The vicuna lives higher than 4000 mtr. This is the smallest lama. The lama's are herd animals who live in herds of more than 200 animals.

Breed and Hunting
People say that the lama is used for many years as pet, the breading method is the same as beef and sheep. The wild Guanacos are hunted because they are a nuissance to the farmers. Wild lamas are protected by the rules of the CITES and the wild Vicunas are fully protected. There is no hunting season, often hunting takes place during the summer, because it is too cold in the winter. The breaded Alpaca can be hunted the whole year round, only the available numbers are small because the local inhabitants also like to eat the meat.
