Habitat
Orixes are real desert animals. They mainly live in south-west Africa,
in or near the Kalahari, South Africa, Namibia, Angola and Botswana.
The orix is one of the very few animalkinds which can live without
ever drinking water. It has built an ingenious system that optimizes
the use of water in plants and limits ist own trnaspiration to the
very least. If there is enough food available, an orix can live
on an area of 25 km2. If there is shortage of food it can use over
1000 km2 of land.
Breeding
Orixes are not breeded.
Hunting
They are real wildlife antelopes, that are even very difficult to
approach for professional hunters. Since orixes are well equipped
to living in dry desert areas, they do not thrire well in more wet
southern African areas. This kind limits a further expansion of
their kind. Many game farms would love to add this beautiful antelope
to their 'game stock'. The hunt mainly takes place at night. As
Namibia has much larger numbers of orixe, most of the orixes shot
for their meat come from this country. Orixes are hunted in the
African hunting season, which lasts from the end of March until
the end of August. The deep frozen supply arrives in Europe from
the beginning of September and is usually sold during the European
game season.
ORIX MEAT
The
meat is light-red and well blooded which makes it very tender.
Cuts:
Imported orix parts which are available are the better parts, like
backfillet, tenderloins and haunch 4 cuts.
