SPRINGBOK - ANTIDORCAS MARSUPILANIS

The springbok is a gazelle-like animal. It is one of the smaller antelopes and has a weight of approximately 30 kg. The springbok is the most common antelope of southern Africa, their numbers are well into the 100,000s.

Habitat
The springbok lives in the most southern region of all gazelle-like animals. It only lives in the south-east of Africa: South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and in a small part of Angola. Although springboks can survive on almost any type of land, they thrive best in the dryer, semi-desert areas like Karoo and Kalahari. Springboks eat grass and leafs and need only a small amount of water to survive.

Breeding
Springbuck are not breeded. In the last couple of years the number of springbucks is increasing rapidly, especially in South Africa. This is because the meat prices of springbuck are higher than those of lamb. That is why farmers prefer to keep springbucks instead of lambs because they also do less harm to the land.

Hunting
Springbuck are almost always hunted by professional hunters. Hunting takes place mostly at night and in the traditional hunting season from March until August. The European fresh season with air transport lasts roughly from April until August. Deep frozen supply arrives from June until October and is therefore perfect for sale in our traditional hunting season. European suppliers often have stock year round.

SPRINGBOK - MEAT

Springbok meat is one of the finest and best meat types available. Fresh meat has a beautiful red colour and a fine thread. It tastes very refined, this is because springboks eat a herbal diet of various grass and leaf kinds.
